Distress Ink Storage Unit - Finished

Well, it's finally finished! And I love it!

The completed height (from floor - including spinner) is approximately 12 1/2". The width is 6 square inches.

I used quite a few sheets of medium weight chipboard, the Destinations paper by Tim Holtz (why would you use anything other than Timmy on this project) and lots and lots of Aleene's Tacky Glue.

For anyone wanting to make this storage unit you can view and print a pdf copy of the measurements here. You could also adapt it to hold most ink pads. The Ranger Archival ink pads fit in and jut out only about an inch or so. It came together in only a couple of days. I recorded making it (not colouring the labels) on Ustream and you can check it out here.

I made the labels by typing them up in a Word document. They are 1/2" high and 11 1/4" long so that the name of the ink could be positioned on all four sides of the ink pad. A pdf version of the labels is available here. (Please note this is version 2 of the labels as the first was missing Squeezed Lemonade - sorry).

The best part of this project is that it SPINS!!! Yay!

    This is absolutely awesome. I've been using an old cassette tape storage unit for ink pad storage, and some ink pads just don't fit. I love that this one could change size for various brands.

    wonderful project! will make the storage for my DI's so much easier to use. I currently have them stacked on top of each other, and if i want a bottom color then i have to pull out the entire stack

    I wondered how thick medium weight chipboard is, and Googled it; .057 inches (1.45 mm) thick. For reference a penny is .061 inches (1.55 mm) thick.

    Hi! I have recently created one of your Distress Inkpad Storage Units...I adjusted the measurements/design to create 48 slots and added a handle (purely for prettiness not to be lifted with!!). After showing to my fellow Kaszazz Constultants they would like me to submit as a Kaszazz Workshop. Would you mind if I did this? I will of course credit you and your blog for your original idea.       I don't mind at all if you have a workshop on this project. Although I would love to see a photo of your completed storage unit.
      I have finally bought the seasonal inks so I'm going to modify my existing unit to accommodate the remaining 4 pads. Shouldn't be too difficult (famous last words LOL).

      I, too, tried to watch your video by copying & pasting the http:etc., which sent me to a site with the IBM Logo at top with "Watson Media" below that; also, the verbiage "If you reached this site to try to view a video, contact the Publisher or, etc., etc." So-o-o-o...Maybe you could put on YouTube? We're all dying to see your creativity in action!!

    Thank you so much for sharing this. I've spent the last couple of days making myself one. Not as big as yours as I only have 30 inkpads but my finished one has 2 extra slots and I've made it so that if I buy even more, I can add extra levels to the bottom of it.

    Love love love it!!! I just finished building my own carousel, all I need is a spinner. It has 48 shelves, 2 are empty for now, but those will get filled in due time as well.
    How did you stick the labels to the ink pads? What did you use?
    And why did you adhere the spinner to the carousel with magnetic sheets?

      I adhered the labels to the ink pads using Scor-tape (very tacky & strong double-sided tape). Yes, I used magnetic sheets to the top of the spinner and the base of the tower.

    WOW, WOW, Jenny is all I can muster up about this project. And I'm still in awe after being so inspired by you that I attempted to make one myself. I didn't have the spinner you have but I did grab one at Wallyworld meant for spices I think or what most call a lazy susan. I think your instructions were pretty close to perfection. Although one part gave me such a hassle I almost abandoned it all together, but I came back and read your encouraging words again, made another pot of Starbucks and jumped back on "the Jenny Train" and I wanna say in two days I had it done. I took some pics to share. Please don't laugh its officially my first non-scrapbooking project so please forgive my naivety to mixed-media or whatever those kind of artists call their kind of work. I know that if I buy more inks, I will definitely come right back here to make another tower to accommodate them, all Thanks & credit goes solely to you Jenny. I was so scared but you not only helped me but you uplifted & inspired me to do this. Thank you Jenny, thank you so very, very much from the bottom of my southern Texas heart Thank you !!! Hope you don't mind the pics taking up room on your page. And if anyone thinks they can't do this, (laughin hehehe..) if my stupid self can do it YOU CAN DO IT TOO !!! Just listen to Jenny and you'll be fine. Of course it took me several times of going over her words of wisdom in my head I imagined Jenny's soft calmin voice talking me through it every step of the way.Just don't give up, you can do this !!!

    Apparently I am more stupid than I previously thought as I can not figure out for the life of me how to post my pics... As I am on my phone and my computer is on the fritz, my Galaxy S3 won't allow me to paste pics from my clipboard. So I'm gonna go Google it to see if I can come up with a solution for my idiocy....LOL !!!
    Unless you don't mind I just e-mail them to you, but I'm sure you are way to busy to fool around with my foolishness. I forgot to look and see if you even posted you e-mail address...duh !!! Lord help me I woke up today on the slow side of my bed, need to go get up on the smart side. Then maybe Google will be kind to me.

    I'm so making this!!! Getting my supplies list together. The 5.5" Plastic Spinners over at Scrapadabadoo don't seem to have the clear square base like yours. The photo shows only the round spinner without the square piece. Do you think this will be just as sturdy as yours? Thanks so much!!!

      No, it won't matter at all. I've used just the round spinner on other storage units and they've held up great. I tend to add a heavyweight piece of chipboard the size of my storage unit (eg: 6"x6") and attach it to the top of the round spinner with Glossy Accents, then attach that entire piece to the storage unit base, if that makes sense?
      In other words, go ahead and use the round spinner :) Hope this helps

      That is great! I will go ahead and order the spinner from them! If I do it the way you mentioned above, will there be no need for the magnetic sheets? I am assuming you use the glossy accents b/c perhaps it holds to the plastic more securely than glue?

      No, you don't really need the magnetic sheets if you glue the spinner/chipboard piece to the base of the storage unit.
      Yes I used Glossy Accents to adhere the chipboard to the PLASTIC spinner :)

      Jenny, here is what I'm running into and I'd like to hear your thoughts. Instead of 11 rows high like yours, I was planning to go 16 rows high (64) pockets. I wanted to hold all of the monthly 2015 releases with a few extra slots. I'm thinking that 16 high is going to be too wobbly or top heavy. What do you think? Should I add something to the bottom to make the bottom heavier or should I think of a new design? Would love to hear your thoughts! =)

      I think the height would be fine as the ink pads are light snyway. I have added a box with two layers on another tower I have made and filled it with 50 full reinkers and it is holding up great, no wobbling at all.

    I ordered the spinner today along with some chipboard!! I can't wait to get started! I may try to do a little twist by adding a feature to hold my blending foams!! We'll see how that works out! I'll be happy to post some links too!! Hope it turns out as nice as yours!

    Final unit looks great, but the link only went to part one of your recording. Would have liked to see it really being put together rather than all the time spent making all the compartments, which of course was the same thing over and over and over!. The Pt. 1 video was a lot of wasted time for the viewer!

      It really is so handy. I have two sitting on my desk, one for the distress inks and one for my archival inks. I know there are more distress ink colours now than the original but you could add layers onto this one with no problem.
