Well, it's finally finished! And I love it!
The completed height (from floor - including spinner) is approximately 12 1/2". The width is 6 square inches.
I used quite a few sheets of medium weight chipboard, the Destinations paper by Tim Holtz (why would you use anything other than Timmy on this project) and lots and lots of Aleene's Tacky Glue.
For anyone wanting to make this storage unit you can view and print a pdf copy of the measurements here. You could also adapt it to hold most ink pads. The Ranger Archival ink pads fit in and jut out only about an inch or so. It came together in only a couple of days. I recorded making it (not colouring the labels) on Ustream and you can check it out here.
I made the labels by typing them up in a Word document. They are 1/2" high and 11 1/4" long so that the name of the ink could be positioned on all four sides of the ink pad. A pdf version of the labels is available here. (Please note this is version 2 of the labels as the first was missing Squeezed Lemonade - sorry).
The best part of this project is that it SPINS!!! Yay!
Here's a video of the storage unit in action (spinning).
Awesome project Jen. I must go back and watch the streams of this from the start.
ReplyDeleteWOOHOO!!! That is just too cool!! So VERY proud of you!!
ReplyDeleteThat is just one 'stinking awesome' project Jen, love these functional projects, super cool !!! Love the spinner, will have to find some of these, not just for doll's heads, lol !!!! Love the all way around label idea too!
ReplyDeletei so have to make one of these. i have wanted something to store my inks in forever and can't understand why someone hasn't made one for sale. guess i will have to get to work and do it myself. thanks for the instructions.
ReplyDeleteWOW it turned out awesome. I LOVE it.
ReplyDeleteFabulicious - WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Amazing design...I'm going give this a try.
ReplyDeleteLOVE IT, Jen!!! This Is my type of project. If I ever get my iPad to work properly since the update I might be able to watch the video. I'm going to make one for myself, Eventually! Great job!! JJ Snelten
ReplyDeleteJen, this is so cool and compact too for those of us who don't have a lot of space. Good job!
ReplyDeleteThis is another project to add to my Already long list of Have to dO ! Luv it !!!
ReplyDeletethis is fabulous Jen LOVE it! tfs huggs Amanda
ReplyDeleteWow! What a lot of work! and the results--awesome!! :):)
ReplyDeleteJen glad you finish this great project. I know you are going to love having your distress inks so convenient. Thank you for doing the ustream and sharing your measurements and labels.
ReplyDeleteAwesome Jen :)
ReplyDeleteAmazing Jen !!!.... i will do for mine too thanks for sharing
ReplyDeleteSusana
Thanks so much everyone for your comments!!! They are very much appreciated and I can't wait to see all of YOUR distress ink storage units made :)
ReplyDeleteSmiles to all
Jen
This is awesome Jen. I think I'm going to start one myself.
ReplyDeleteThat is fantastic! I think I need to give this a go!
ReplyDeleteWhere did you get the plastic turntable? I have only found metal ones that have to have a secondary base screwed to them.
ReplyDeleteHi Margaret
DeleteI bought it online at www.scrapadabadoo.com
This is absolutely awesome. I've been using an old cassette tape storage unit for ink pad storage, and some ink pads just don't fit. I love that this one could change size for various brands.
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing!
Great project! This looks ideal for my Distress Inks. I use them on just about every project I make so I like to have them handy. Thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeletewonderful project! will make the storage for my DI's so much easier to use. I currently have them stacked on top of each other, and if i want a bottom color then i have to pull out the entire stack
ReplyDeletethanks for this great project
You are such a star! Thanks for the PDF lable print out. I am about to print it. I had stuck little lables on one side with the colour swatch, but they are always on the other side of my pad! LOL!
ReplyDeleteWOW!! that is really cool!
ReplyDeleteThat is incredible. Love the way you decorated it too, and the colored coded labels. Very creative!
ReplyDeleteInkilicious! What a super functional and attractive make for the craft space!!!
ReplyDeleteI wondered how thick medium weight chipboard is, and Googled it; .057 inches (1.45 mm) thick. For reference a penny is .061 inches (1.55 mm) thick.
ReplyDeleteThis is GREAT!!! Where did you get your little rotating device from?
ReplyDeleteHi Dee,thanks. I bought the spinner from www.scrapadabadoo.com

Jen
Thanks so much, Jenny!!!
DeleteWOW! LOVE IT!!!
ReplyDeleteHi! I have recently created one of your Distress Inkpad Storage Units...I adjusted the measurements/design to create 48 slots and added a handle (purely for prettiness not to be lifted with!!). After showing to my fellow Kaszazz Constultants they would like me to submit as a Kaszazz Workshop. Would you mind if I did this? I will of course credit you and your blog for your original idea. Thanks Rae
ReplyDeleteHi Rae
DeleteI don't mind at all if you have a workshop on this project. Although I would love to see a photo of your completed storage unit.
I have finally bought the seasonal inks so I'm going to modify my existing unit to accommodate the remaining 4 pads. Shouldn't be too difficult (famous last words LOL).
Please send me a link to your blog or FaceBook page or Flickr or YouTube channel via my email (link at top of page).

Hi Jen,
ReplyDeleteI just wanted to drop in to tell you that I made your totally cool ink pad holder! Here is where you can see it http://janabailey.blogspot.com/2013/02/distressed-ink-holder.html
I am also working on a cover for it so that I can take it with me when I travel to scrapbook! Thanks for sharing your instructions and labels. I would never have been able to come up with this myself.
Blessings,
Jana
Just saw your ink storage unit Jana, love it!
DeleteAlso left a comment on your blog :)

Trying to watch your video but it just says content is not online...I really want to make this but I can't see the video
ReplyDeleteHi
DeleteI don't know what you're being directed to but when I clicked on the link it took me to the Ustream recorded video.
Try copying the following link and pasting it into your browser and see what happens:
http://www.ustream.tv/recorded/25565997
Thanks
Jen
I, too, tried to watch your video by copying & pasting the http:etc., which sent me to a site with the IBM Logo at top with "Watson Media" below that; also, the verbiage "If you reached this site to try to view a video, contact the Publisher or, etc., etc." So-o-o-o...Maybe you could put on YouTube? We're all dying to see your creativity in action!!
DeleteiPad was the issue...thanks so much for getting back to me!!!
ReplyDeleteThank you so much for sharing this. I've spent the last couple of days making myself one. Not as big as yours as I only have 30 inkpads but my finished one has 2 extra slots and I've made it so that if I buy even more, I can add extra levels to the bottom of it.
ReplyDeleteLOL I should have made it one more level myself, I think I can do it without too much problem - I THINK lol. Glad you like it :)
DeleteLove love love it!!! I just finished building my own carousel, all I need is a spinner. It has 48 shelves, 2 are empty for now, but those will get filled in due time as well.
ReplyDeleteHow did you stick the labels to the ink pads? What did you use?
And why did you adhere the spinner to the carousel with magnetic sheets?
Hi Carin
DeleteI adhered the labels to the ink pads using Scor-tape (very tacky & strong double-sided tape). Yes, I used magnetic sheets to the top of the spinner and the base of the tower.
Thanks for commenting :)

WOW, WOW, Jenny is all I can muster up about this project. And I'm still in awe after being so inspired by you that I attempted to make one myself. I didn't have the spinner you have but I did grab one at Wallyworld meant for spices I think or what most call a lazy susan. I think your instructions were pretty close to perfection. Although one part gave me such a hassle I almost abandoned it all together, but I came back and read your encouraging words again, made another pot of Starbucks and jumped back on "the Jenny Train" and I wanna say in two days I had it done. I took some pics to share. Please don't laugh its officially my first non-scrapbooking project so please forgive my naivety to mixed-media or whatever those kind of artists call their kind of work. I know that if I buy more inks, I will definitely come right back here to make another tower to accommodate them, all Thanks & credit goes solely to you Jenny. I was so scared but you not only helped me but you uplifted & inspired me to do this. Thank you Jenny, thank you so very, very much from the bottom of my southern Texas heart Thank you !!! Hope you don't mind the pics taking up room on your page. And if anyone thinks they can't do this, (laughin hehehe..) if my stupid self can do it YOU CAN DO IT TOO !!! Just listen to Jenny and you'll be fine. Of course it took me several times of going over her words of wisdom in my head I imagined Jenny's soft calmin voice talking me through it every step of the way.Just don't give up, you can do this !!!
ReplyDeleteAgain THANK YOU Jenny!!! :-)

Oh thank you so much for the feedback on my instructions. It's so hard to proofread your own work so it's good to know that they were pretty spot on.
DeleteAnd yes, ANYONE could make this :)

Jenny,
ReplyDeleteApparently I am more stupid than I previously thought as I can not figure out for the life of me how to post my pics... As I am on my phone and my computer is on the fritz, my Galaxy S3 won't allow me to paste pics from my clipboard. So I'm gonna go Google it to see if I can come up with a solution for my idiocy....LOL !!!
Unless you don't mind I just e-mail them to you, but I'm sure you are way to busy to fool around with my foolishness. I forgot to look and see if you even posted you e-mail address...duh !!! Lord help me I woke up today on the slow side of my bed, need to go get up on the smart side. Then maybe Google will be kind to me.
Sorry Jenny, I sure was excited to show you what you inspired me to do....doggone it !!!
Thank you again !!

Oh you cannot post pics here on someone else's blog but you can post them on your own blog (if you have one?). Then you can send me the link to your blog so I can go check it out!!! OR

I'm so making this!!! Getting my supplies list together. The 5.5" Plastic Spinners over at Scrapadabadoo don't seem to have the clear square base like yours. The photo shows only the round spinner without the square piece. Do you think this will be just as sturdy as yours? Thanks so much!!!
ReplyDeleteHi Tiffany
DeleteNo, it won't matter at all. I've used just the round spinner on other storage units and they've held up great. I tend to add a heavyweight piece of chipboard the size of my storage unit (eg: 6"x6") and attach it to the top of the round spinner with Glossy Accents, then attach that entire piece to the storage unit base, if that makes sense?
In other words, go ahead and use the round spinner :) Hope this helps
Smiles
Jen
That is great! I will go ahead and order the spinner from them! If I do it the way you mentioned above, will there be no need for the magnetic sheets? I am assuming you use the glossy accents b/c perhaps it holds to the plastic more securely than glue?
DeleteNo, you don't really need the magnetic sheets if you glue the spinner/chipboard piece to the base of the storage unit.
DeleteYes I used Glossy Accents to adhere the chipboard to the PLASTIC spinner :)
Hope this all helps and please link pics of completed project for us :)

Jenny, here is what I'm running into and I'd like to hear your thoughts. Instead of 11 rows high like yours, I was planning to go 16 rows high (64) pockets. I wanted to hold all of the monthly 2015 releases with a few extra slots. I'm thinking that 16 high is going to be too wobbly or top heavy. What do you think? Should I add something to the bottom to make the bottom heavier or should I think of a new design? Would love to hear your thoughts! =)
DeleteHi Tiffany
DeleteI think the height would be fine as the ink pads are light snyway. I have added a box with two layers on another tower I have made and filled it with 50 full reinkers and it is holding up great, no wobbling at all.
I ordered the spinner today along with some chipboard!! I can't wait to get started! I may try to do a little twist by adding a feature to hold my blending foams!! We'll see how that works out! I'll be happy to post some links too!! Hope it turns out as nice as yours!
ReplyDeleteFinal unit looks great, but the link only went to part one of your recording. Would have liked to see it really being put together rather than all the time spent making all the compartments, which of course was the same thing over and over and over!. The Pt. 1 video was a lot of wasted time for the viewer!
ReplyDeleteHi Colorado Crafter
DeleteI'm so sorry my videos didn't help you. The problem with the long drawn out videos is that it was recorded live on Ustream with an audience. The link was to part 1 of the stream however, there are 4 other videos on Ustream which appear to the right of part 1 in the video list tab. Here are the links if you still want to watch (please note that part 5 seems to either be missing or I stuffed up the numbering of the videos:

ReplyDeletelove it!
ReplyDeleteJenny - I just came across your spinning ink pad holder. What a great idea. I'm putting it on my list of things to do during my vacation between Christmas and New Years. Thanks for sharing the idea, the PDF, and the video.
ReplyDeleteThanks Sherry :)
DeleteLet me know how you get n with making it. Any problems just let me know :)
Wow amazing project. I'm going to try and make it. Very generous of you to share all your hard work with us. The labels, the video, instructions. I'm impressed. One question…..where did you get the lazy susan section for the bottom????
ReplyDeleteHi Shona
DeleteIt really is so handy. I have two sitting on my desk, one for the distress inks and one for my archival inks. I know there are more distress ink colours now than the original but you could add layers onto this one with no problem.
I bought my plastic spinners from Scrapadabadoo, an online store in the US. Here is a link to the spinners for you:

Hope this helps, have fun!
